Red’s Jazz Shoe Shine

With the support of the Kresge Foundation, we’re restoring and reactivating the historic Red’s Jazz Shoe Shine Parlor at 8148 Oakland Avenue. For more than 50 years, the space was a cultural epicenter—a mixing chamber for the city’s top performers, politicians, and luminaries, the shoeshine provided a storefront cover for a speakeasy where the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and Aretha Franklin made regular appearances.
